Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a firm message on Monday as the country marked its 35th Independence Day, saying Ukraine wants an end to the war but will not accept peace on terms that amount to surrender. Speaking during the national celebrations in Kyiv, Zelenskyy stressed that his country remains committed to finding a peaceful solution while protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. His remarks came as the war with Russia continues after more than four years of full-scale fighting. Zelenskyy appeared in a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt while speaking near St Michael's Monastery in Kyiv. Burned-out Russian military vehicles displayed at the site served as a reminder of the destruction caused by the conflict.

Zelenskyy Rejects Territorial Concessions

A major issue in any future settlement remains the disputed Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly demanded that Kyiv surrender territory that remains under Ukrainian control. Zelenskyy rejected the idea that giving up the remaining Ukrainian-held areas of Donbas would automatically bring the conflict to an end. He warned that such a move could allow Russia to maintain pressure on Ukraine and potentially continue its aggression The Ukrainian leader said Kyiv would not allow Russia to gain the initiative or persuade Europe and the wider international community that territorial concessions alone could solve the crisis.

International Leaders Gather in Kyiv

Several foreign leaders and senior officials travelled to Kyiv for the Ukraine Independence Day celebrations. Among them were British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, European Council President Antonio Costa, Lithuania's President Gitanas Nauseda, Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and other European leaders. Burnham was also scheduled to co-chair a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, a group of countries supporting Ukraine during the war.

Zelenskyy Calls for More International Support

Zelenskyy used the occasion to honour Ukrainian soldiers and civilians who have endured years of conflict. He urged international partners to provide Ukraine with the military and diplomatic assistance needed to strengthen its position. He also called for greater sanctions against Russia and increased international pressure to bring Moscow back to meaningful negotiations. Zelenskyy further appealed to the United States to overcome its remaining concerns regarding Russia and urged China to take a more active position instead of remaining silent.

War Continues Along a Long Frontline

Despite some changes on the battlefield, fighting continues along a frontline stretching roughly 1,200 kilometres. Russian forces remain active in eastern Ukraine, while Ukrainian forces have attempted to regain territory in the southeast. Russia has also intensified air strikes on Ukraine, targeting cities and infrastructure away from the frontline. At the same time, Ukraine has expanded long-range attacks against Russian refineries and logistical facilities in an effort to weaken Moscow's ability to sustain its military campaign.

What Is Zelenskyy's Position on Peace?

Zelenskyy says Ukraine wants peace, but it will not accept an agreement that requires surrendering territory or compromising the country's future security. He continues to call for negotiations backed by international pressure and security support.
