Josh Kerr and Jakob Ingebrigtsen Set for 1,500m Rivalry Rematch

Josh Kerr and Jakob Ingebrigtsen Set for 1,500m Rivalry Rematch

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

British middle-distance star Josh Kerr and Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen are set to renew one of the most closely watched rivalries in 1,500m athletics next month. The two elite runners have received exceptional invitations to compete at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary, from September 11 to 13. Their upcoming meeting is expected to attract major attention from athletics fans worldwide, as Kerr and Ingebrigtsen have developed a fierce competitive relationship over the years. While Ingebrigtsen has enjoyed the better overall head-to-head record in the 1,500m, Kerr has also produced some memorable victories against the Norwegian.

Kerr and Ingebrigtsen Have a History of Close Battles

The two runners have faced each other several times over 1,500 metres, but their last meeting in the event came at the Zurich Diamond League in 2024. Their rivalry has remained one of the biggest talking points in world athletics, particularly after Kerr defeated Ingebrigtsen to claim gold at the 2023 World Championships. At the Tokyo Olympics, Ingebrigtsen finished ahead of Kerr, while the British runner secured bronze. Two years later, at the Paris Olympics, Kerr won silver behind American Cole Hocker, while Ingebrigtsen finished fourth. Their competitive relationship has also included sharp exchanges away from the track, adding another layer of interest to their next encounter.

Kerr Returns After a Record-Breaking Season

Kerr enters the Budapest competition after an impressive 2026 season. In July, he broke the mile world record at the London Diamond League before winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The British runner later decided to miss the European Championships as part of his workload management. His decision attracted criticism from Ingebrigtsen, who expressed disappointment that Kerr was not competing at the championships. Kerr has defended his choices, stressing that his objective remains competing against the strongest athletes on the biggest stages.

Who Will Compete in the 1,500m?

The Budapest Ultimate Championship will feature a highly competitive 1,500m field. Alongside Kerr and Ingebrigtsen, American Olympic champion Cole Hocker and Portugal’s world champion Isaac Nader are also expected to compete.

What Makes the Budapest Race Important?

The clash will give fans another opportunity to watch Kerr and Ingebrigtsen compete directly over 1,500m. With their previous championship battles, contrasting personalities and strong recent performances, the race is shaping up as one of the headline events of the inaugural competition.
