A 66-year-old woman suffered minor facial injuries after her SUV crashed through the glass doors of the departure hall at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) on Friday.
Police said preliminary investigations found that the woman had forgotten to place the SUV’s gear in the parking position before getting out of the vehicle.
According to reports, Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Shahrudin Mat Husain said the woman had stopped in the airport’s second lane to pick up her child.
She was preparing to change drivers when the incident occurred.
Police said the woman is believed to have forgotten to shift the vehicle’s gear to “P” while changing drivers. As she attempted to get out, the SUV started moving slowly.
The woman panicked and accidentally pressed the accelerator, causing the vehicle to move forward with greater force.
The SUV first collided with another vehicle before crashing through the glass doors of the airport’s departure hall. It then struck a pillar of the building.
The woman managed to get out of the SUV before it collided with the airport building.
She sustained minor injuries to her face after being struck by fragments of broken glass. She was subsequently taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital I for medical treatment.
No passengers or airport staff were injured in the incident.
Police are investigating the incident under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 under the Road Transport Act 1987.
