In Abu Dhabi, 47 private schools have been temporarily restricted from enrolling Emirati students after receiving an ‘Acceptable’ or lower grade in the latest school inspection report, according to the Irtiaq’a inspection conducted by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK). These restrictions will remain in place until the schools meet the required regulatory standards.
Previously, schools graded ‘Acceptable’ or lower were limited in expanding student capacity or adding new grades. However, restrictions could be lifted for schools that show verified improvement. In this latest inspection, 23 schools demonstrated significant progress and moved up to the ‘Good’ category.
The full inspection report highlights the current ratings of Abu Dhabi’s private schools:
13 schools – Outstanding
51 schools – Very Good
93 schools – Good
42 schools – Acceptable
5 schools – Weak
The Irtiaq’a framework, part of the UAE Unified School Inspection Framework, continues to serve as a key regulatory tool to monitor and improve school performance. Schools are assessed on a six-point scale: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak, and Very Weak. In line with national standards, Good is considered the minimum acceptable rating for every school in the UAE.
Inspections are conducted every two years and evaluate schools across six core standards and 17 performance indicators, covering areas such as teaching quality, curriculum effectiveness, student progress, leadership, and health and safety measures. The results aim to drive continuous school improvement and ensure that students receive high-quality education.
ADEK emphasized that schools receiving lower ratings must take urgent corrective measures to enhance educational outcomes and meet national expectations before being allowed to enroll Emirati students again.
This report reinforces Abu Dhabi’s commitment to quality education and accountability in private schools, ensuring that every student benefits from a strong learning environment.
