Padang, West Sumatra — Indonesia’s Culture Minister Fadli Zon has proposed a bold plan to revitalize the historic Indarung I cement factory as a cultural and educational venue, aiming to give new life to a site of immense industrial heritage.
During a visit to the now‑defunct cement plant in Indarung Village, which once held the title of Southeast Asia’s first cement factory, the minister emphasized that the heritage site could be repurposed as a space for exhibitions, theatrical performances, and broader artistic and cultural expression.
Operating for almost 90 years until its closure in 1999, the Indarung I Plant has international recognition, with archive records from 1910 to 1972 registered under UNESCO’s Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP), underscoring its historical significance in industry, gender inclusivity, and multicultural workforce contributions.
The Indonesian government has already designated parts of the site as national cultural heritage, highlighting its role in the nation’s industrialisation and symbol of development. Minister Zon urged cooperation among central and regional authorities, local communities, and PT Semen Padang to restore and activate the location so that it becomes a living venue for education and public engagement with the nation’s past.
