North Korea–China Train Service Resumes

North Korea–China Train Service Resumes

Post by : Shakul

Cross-border rail travel between North Korea and China has resumed after nearly six years, as the first passenger train from Pyongyang arrived in Beijing.

According to Chinese railway authorities, the train identified as K28 completed the journey in more than 23 hours, reaching Beijing early in the morning. The rail link had been suspended in 2020 when North Korea sealed its borders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The reopening of the route signals a gradual restoration of travel and trade links between the two neighbouring countries. China remains North Korea’s largest trading partner and a crucial source of economic and diplomatic support for the isolated state.

Reports indicate that the train crossed the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, which connects the North Korean city of Sinuiju with Dandong. The bridge spans the Yalu River, a major border crossing point between the two nations.

Travel agencies have reported that certain carriages on the train were specifically reserved for passengers travelling to North Korea. These wagons are typically transferred to another train at Dandong before crossing the border and continuing onward to Pyongyang.

The reopening of the rail service is also significant for tourism. North Korea had largely banned foreign visitors during the pandemic and has only recently allowed limited entry for certain travellers under controlled arrangements.

Observers say the restoration of the train route reflects improving logistical and economic cooperation between the two countries as regional travel networks gradually return to normal after pandemic-era restrictions.
