Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari has questioned whether taxpayers could eventually be exposed to the financial burden of supporting AirAsia, after reports emerged about government involvement in assessing the airline’s financial requirements. The issue came into focus after Malaysia’s Finance Ministry was reported to have appointed Alton Aviation Consultancy to examine the budget carrier’s financial position and funding needs. The appointment has prompted questions about the government’s role in the airline’s financial situation.

Why Did the Government Hire a Consultant?

Fadhli questioned why a private airline would require the government to appoint an outside consultant to examine its financial needs. He argued that a company such as AirAsia would normally have its own management team, auditors and financial advisers to handle financial assessments. The MP said the government should clearly explain what it expects the consultancy to determine and whether the review is connected to possible financial assistance.

Concerns About Public Money

Fadhli also raised the possibility that the current assessment could become an early step towards an AirAsia bailout. He called for transparency if public funds, government support or guarantees are eventually considered. His main concern is that any form of government-backed assistance could potentially transfer financial risk to taxpayers.

AirAsia Facing Financial Pressure

The questions come as AirAsia works to raise additional funds amid financial pressure. Reuters reported that the airline is seeking substantial financing through international debt markets as well as local credit facilities. The company’s financial position has attracted increased attention because of its liabilities and limited cash reserves. Rising fuel costs and foreign-exchange losses have also added pressure to the airline’s finances.

No Confirmed Government Bailout

Despite the concerns raised by the MP, available reports do not indicate that the Malaysian government has decided to bail out AirAsia. Reuters reported that there was no current indication of a planned government bailout or guarantee for the airline’s fundraising efforts. Fadhli nevertheless wants the government to provide a clear explanation about whether any form of assistance is being considered.

Fadhli said that if there is no plan for a bailout, the government should make that position clear. He argued that the public deserves information if government money or guarantees could become involved in supporting the airline. The debate therefore goes beyond AirAsia’s financial position and touches on broader questions about the use of public resources to support private companies.
