Vijay received major political support from Indian National Congress as discussions continue over the formation of the next government in Tamil Nadu following the recent assembly elections. The Congress party announced that it is ready to support Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, but placed a key condition on the alliance.
According to party leaders, Congress said the alliance must not include what it described as “communal forces” that do not believe in the Constitution of India. The statement was issued by Girish Chodankar, the All India Congress Committee in-charge for Tamil Nadu, after discussions between the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party.
The support from Congress adds five more MLAs to Vijay’s numbers in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won 107 seats in the 234-member assembly during the recent elections, making it the single largest party. With Congress support, the total rises to 112 seats, leaving Vijay still six seats short of the majority mark of 118 required to form the government.
Political sources said Vijay has also started talks with other regional and Left parties, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India Marxist. If these parties agree to support TVK, the alliance could cross the majority mark and allow Vijay to officially become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The latest political developments have created major excitement across Chennai and other parts of the state. Vijay’s dramatic entry into politics and his strong electoral performance have significantly changed the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, ending decades of dominance by the two major Dravidian parties.
The Congress statement also said that the alliance with TVK is based on mutual respect, secular values and a shared political vision. Party leaders added that the partnership would not only focus on government formation but could also continue during future local body elections, Lok Sabha polls and Rajya Sabha elections.
At the same time, reports emerged that some TVK leaders met Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the leader of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, in Chennai. The meeting has sparked speculation about possible political realignments and internal divisions within existing alliances in the state.
Vijay and Rahul Gandhi were also mentioned together in the Congress statement, which said both leaders are committed to respecting the mandate given by the people of Tamil Nadu and working towards a progressive and secular government focused on youth development and public welfare.
In the recently concluded elections, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam shocked political observers by winning 108 seats and emerging as the largest party in the assembly. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won only 59 seats, while All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured 47 seats. Vijay also won both constituencies he contested and is reportedly expected to retain the Perambur seat while vacating Trichy East, which may lead to a by-election in the coming months.
