Air travel worldwide faced sudden disruption after Airbus ordered urgent inspections and repairs on nearly 6,000 A320-family jets following the discovery of a critical software issue affecting flight control systems. The issue, linked to intense bursts of solar radiation interfering with onboard altitude-control computers, was identified after an incident in October in which a JetBlue flight between the United States and Mexico suddenly lost altitude. The aircraft later made an emergency landing, injuring at least 15 passengers.
The recall affects A318, A319, A320, and A321 models across the globe. Airbus confirmed that most planes can be corrected with a software update taking approximately three hours. Airlines such as Wizz Air and EasyJet have already completed updates on many of their jets and returned them to service. However, around 900 older aircraft require full computer replacements, preventing them from carrying passengers until the hardware is replaced.
Regulators in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States issued emergency airworthiness directives, restricting affected aircraft to "ferry flights" without passengers until repairs are completed. Despite the large-scale recall, major airports in the UK reported minimal disruption, while airlines including British Airways and Air India stated their fleets were only slightly affected.
Airbus emphasized that the recall is a precautionary measure to maintain the highest safety standards. Experts noted that while this situation is rare, it illustrates how external factors like solar radiation can interfere with modern “fly-by-wire” aircraft, where computer systems are central to flight control. Aviation authorities stressed that air travel remains one of the safest modes of transport, highlighting the rapid global response and robust safety systems that protect passengers.
