The 2025 US Open in New York kicked off with thrilling matches and historic moments, as Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz began his quest for a sixth Grand Slam title and Venus Williams prepared for a record-extending 25th appearance at the prestigious tennis tournament.

On Monday, the Arthur Ashe Stadium was the center of attention. Fans packed the stadium to watch two major stars: Alcaraz and Williams. Alcaraz, the second seed, faced the big-serving American Reilly Opelka in the first round, while Venus Williams played against Czech player Karolina Muchova, the 11th seed.

The 22-year-old Alcaraz is aiming for his second US Open victory after winning the tournament in 2022. He has already faced Italian star Jannik Sinner twice in Grand Slam finals this year, and another exciting matchup with Sinner could happen later in New York if both advance through the rounds.

Meanwhile, Venus Williams, aged 45 and ranked 602nd in the world, received a wildcard to compete after returning to professional tennis in July following a 16-month break. Williams’ appearance is not just about her personal achievements—it also honors tennis history. Her 2025 US Open run coincides with the 75th anniversary of Althea Gibson, the African-American tennis trailblazer who first competed in the US national championships in 1950. A special ceremony on Arthur Ashe Stadium recognized Gibson’s achievements before Williams’ match.

“It does not get old; it just gets more exciting,” Williams said about playing in the US Open. She also highlighted the importance of celebrating Gibson’s legacy, saying, “The most important part is that we are celebrating it and recognising it, because Althea accomplished so much, and a lot of it has not been given the credit it deserves and the attention and the praise.”

Emotional Farewells

The early rounds of the tournament also brought emotional moments. Petra Kvitova, the two-time Wimbledon champion, played her final match against France’s Diane Parry. The 35-year-old Czech star, who had announced her retirement after the US Open, lost 6-1, 6-0. Despite the defeat, Kvitova broke down in tears after addressing the fans, saying, “I hoped I would put on a better show today. It was tough to know it could be my last match, and emotionally it was very tough as well.”

Surprising Upsets

Tennis fans also witnessed shocking early exits. Madison Keys, the Australian Open champion and sixth seed, was defeated by Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in a close match, 6-7 (10/12), 7-6 (7/3), 7-5. Keys admitted that nerves affected her performance: “Today was the first time in a while where my nerves really got the better of me, and it kind of became a little bit paralysing. I was just slow, I wasn’t seeing things the way that I wanted to, which I feel like resulted in a lot of bad decisions and lazy footwork.”

Other early-round results included Czech veteran Barbora Krejcikova defeating Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko 6-3, 6-2. Belgian 19th seed Elise Mertens dominated wildcard entrant Alyssa Ahn 6-1, 6-0. In another exciting match, Ukrainian 30th seed Dayana Yastremska was eliminated by Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.

Historic Moments in the Men’s Draw

In the men’s competition, qualifier Coleman Wong made history by becoming the first player from Hong Kong to win a Grand Slam singles match in the Open era. He defeated US player Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7/4). British fifth seed Jack Draper also advanced, defeating Argentina’s Federico Gomez in four sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (7/9), 6-2.
