The head coach of India U-17 men's football team, Bibiano Fernandes, has unveiled the 23-player squad for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026, set to take place in Saudi Arabia starting on May 5. The Indian contingent aims to secure a spot in the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2026.
Known as the Blue Colts, the Indian side has been diligently preparing through training sessions and international friendlies. Prior to their journey to Saudi Arabia, they trained in Doha, Qatar, where they engaged in two closed-door friendlies, managing a 1-1 draw in their first match followed by a goalless stalemate in the second. The coaching staff believes these encounters have significantly enhanced the players' fitness levels and tactical awareness.
India finds itself in Group D facing formidable opponents like the Australian and Uzbek national U-17 teams. North Korea was initially included in the group but withdrew, leaving it as a three-team round. India's first match is against Australia on May 6, with their next clash against Uzbekistan on May 10.
This tournament holds substantial importance for India, as finishing in the top two spots in their group will secure a quarter-final berth and subsequently a ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026. This opportunity has ramped up enthusiasm around the young squad, with hopes of qualifying based on merit for the first time.
Bibiano Fernandes, regarded as one of India's leading youth coaches, has mentored countless young athletes who have gone on to represent the nation at higher levels. Experts believe his extensive experience and emphasis on discipline will be crucial for the squad's performance in the tournament.
The selected squad showcases talents from various regions across India, emphasizing the expanding influence of youth football. In goalkeeping, Alok Nishad, Manashjyoti Baruah, and Rajrup Sarkar will defend the net. The defensive lineup includes Abhishek Kumar Mondal, Indra Rana Magar, Korou Meitei Konthoujam, Lawmsangzuala, Lesvin Rebelo, Md Aimaan Bin, and Shubham Poonia.
Midfielders selected by Bibiano Fernandes include Dallalmuon Gangte, Denny Singh Wangkhem, Diamond Singh Thokchom, Moosa Ashiq Sofi, and Nitishkumar Meitei Yengkhom. The attack features Adil Aman A, Azlaan Shah Kh, Gunleiba Wangkheirakpam, Heeranganba Seram, Rahan Ahmed, Raj Singh Wahengbam, Washington Singh Ngangom, and Yuvraj Kadam.
India's recent ventures in youth football have shown positive trends, fueling fans' hopes that the U-17 team can sustain this momentum on the Asian stage. Despite strong competition from Australia and Uzbekistan, the Indian squad remains optimistic about making their mark in the tournament.
