Vietnam Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has called on ASEAN member states to adopt a bold and forward-looking vision as the region prepares for a rapidly changing global landscape. Speaking at the opening session of the ASEAN Future Forum 2026 in Hanoi, the Prime Minister outlined three strategic dimensions that he believes will define ASEAN’s future success.
Addressing regional leaders, diplomats, and policymakers, Hung emphasized that ASEAN must move beyond merely adapting to global developments and instead play an active role in shaping them. He noted that technological innovation, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and green development are fundamentally reshaping economies and international relations around the world.
Reflecting on ASEAN’s nearly six decades of growth, the Vietnamese leader praised the bloc’s ability to overcome differences and build a community based on trust, cooperation, and mutual respect. He said ASEAN’s strength lies not only in its population of nearly 700 million people but also in its resilience and diversity.
The first strategic dimension proposed by Hung focuses on ASEAN becoming a stronger contributor to global governance. He argued that the region should actively participate in creating international norms, rules, and cooperation frameworks rather than simply responding to changes initiated elsewhere. ASEAN, he said, should continue serving as a center of dialogue, trust, and regional stability.
The second dimension centers on transforming ASEAN into a hub of innovation. While the region has long been a critical manufacturing base and supply chain destination, Hung stressed that future competitiveness will depend on technological advancement and knowledge-based growth. He called for greater investment in research, innovation, digital infrastructure, and human capital development.
The third strategic goal highlights the importance of building a people-centered ASEAN. According to Hung, economic growth alone cannot define success. He stressed that development must create opportunities for young people, empower women, support vulnerable communities, and ensure that every citizen benefits from regional integration and prosperity.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to ASEAN’s long-term vision and regional cooperation. He expressed confidence that a united and innovative ASEAN can play a greater role in promoting peace, prosperity, and sustainable development across the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
