The Public Works Authority of Qatar, known as Ashghal, has reported significant strides in sustainable building initiatives through its projects initiated since 2022.
In a press release issued on Monday, Ashghal outlined its comprehensive strategy for managing and recycling construction and demolition (C&D) waste. This initiative aims to optimize resource utilization, decrease waste production, and uphold the principles of a circular economy, aligning with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy.
Ashghal reported that approximately 2.5 million cubic meters of excavated material have been channeled to Qatar Primary Materials Company’s recycling facilities rather than thrown away.
This method has allowed for a more efficient use of resources while minimizing the volume of construction waste that needs to be disposed of.
The authority has successfully recycled in excess of 300,000 tons of C&D waste, as part of its sustainability initiative.
These recycling efforts aim to lower environmental footprints and promote the reuse of critical building materials in subsequent projects.
The announcement emphasized that around 80,000 tons of wood waste have been directly repurposed at construction sites.
Furthermore, Ashghal has redirected various other waste types to certified recycling facilities, including:
These strategies bolster responsible waste management while enhancing resource efficiency in Ashghal's construction efforts.
Ashghal has additionally announced that nearly 8,000 tons of food waste have been repurposed instead of being discarded.
This food waste has been transformed into organic compost or processed at selected facilities, facilitating waste reduction while supporting eco-friendly disposal practices.
The authority stated that its waste management and recycling framework demonstrates its dedication to sustainable advancement through improved resource efficiency, reduced waste, and promotion of circular economy practices.
These projects reinforce the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 as well as the Third National Development Strategy, while enhancing sustainability within the construction industry across the nation.
