Expert Advice on Asthma Management Amid Rising Pollution in Ghaziabad

Expert Advice on Asthma Management Amid Rising Pollution in Ghaziabad

Post by : Saif Rahman

As Delhi and its surrounding areas confront dangerously elevated air pollution levels, those with respiratory issues, particularly asthma, are at heightened risk. The toxic smog impacts not only the broader public but can significantly exacerbate symptoms in individuals with chronic lung conditions. Dr. Kamal Kishore Pandey, an experienced pulmonologist at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital in Kaushambi, Ghaziabad, outlines the health dangers and shares actionable advice for asthmatic patients.

Understanding the Dangers of Smog and Pollution

Dr. Pandey emphasizes that air pollution poses a serious public health challenge. “Smog and airborne contaminants can result in lung cancer, disorders such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respiratory infections, as well as complications like stroke and heart disease,” he states. Pollutants can irritate airways and inflame lung tissue, manifesting as symptoms like breathlessness, wheezing, coughing, and chest discomfort.

Asthma and COPD sufferers are particularly susceptible due to their already sensitive airways. The World Health Organization warns that fine particulate matter from pollution contributes to nearly seven million global deaths each year. In cities like Delhi, elevated pollution levels may lead to severe symptoms and result in hospitalizations for those with chronic respiratory conditions.

Impact of Air Pollution on Asthma Symptoms

According to Dr. Pandey, while air pollution does not directly cause asthma, it greatly exacerbates symptoms for individuals already diagnosed with the condition. Pollutants can inflame and constrict the airways, resulting in coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and chest pain. Irritation may also affect the eyes and throat, complicating everyday activities for asthmatic individuals.

Six Essential Tips for Asthmatics

To alleviate the effects of air pollution, Dr. Pandey suggests six vital steps for those managing asthma:

Create a Personalized Asthma Management Plan – Consult your healthcare provider to have a clear plan of action in case symptoms escalate.

Adapt Your Plan to Your Environment – Ensure your asthma management plan is suitable for your workplace, lifestyle, and local conditions.

Minimize Outdoor Activities – Stay indoors on days with poor air quality. Keep track of air quality indices before heading outside.

Use Protective Face Masks – Masks can filter out harmful particles, dust, and germs. Regularly replace disposable masks or wash reusable ones.

Maintain Hydration – Air pollution can lead to dehydration, which may dry out airway linings. Stay well-hydrated to help alleviate symptoms like headaches or nausea.

Boost Immunity with Nutrition – Incorporate foods rich in vitamin C, magnesium, and omega-3s, such as leafy greens, garlic, ginger, yogurt, and eggs to enhance your immune system and decrease flare-ups.

Raising Awareness and Taking Action

Dr. Pandey stresses the importance of proactive steps for individuals with asthma, especially during periods of heightened pollution. By adopting these straightforward yet effective strategies, patients can help reduce the harmful effects of smog and sustain healthier lung function. With consistent vigilance, asthmatics can safeguard against deteriorating air quality while leading active, healthy lives.
