The first day of the Test match between Australia and West Indies in Bridgetown was full of action. Fourteen players lost their wickets on the same day!
Australia chose to bat first, but things didn’t go their way. They were all out for just 180 runs in less than 57 overs. Two fast bowlers from the West Indies, Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph, were brilliant. They took nine wickets together. Seales got five wickets, and Joseph got four.
Only a few Australian batters did well. Travis Head scored 59, and Usman Khawaja made 47. Pat Cummins added 28 runs, and Beau Webster scored 11. None of the other batters could reach double figures.
Australia’s batting was weak, but their bowlers made a strong comeback. Fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins helped take four West Indies wickets by the end of the day. West Indies were 57 runs for 4 wickets when play ended.
This match was special for Australia because it was their first Test match in the Caribbean in 10 years. Some new players were brought in, like teenagers Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis. Sadly, they didn’t score much — only 3 and 5 runs.
West Indies also had a poor start. Starc got rid of both their openers quickly. Cummins and Hazlewood then took two more wickets, making the match exciting and balanced going into Day 2.
