More than five decades after humans last traveled beyond Earth’s orbit, NASA is preparing for a historic return to deep space with its Artemis II mission, expected to launch in early April 2026. This mission will mark the first human journey beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972, making it a major milestone in modern space exploration.
Artemis II will carry four astronauts: Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. The crew will embark on a 10-day journey around the Moon, traveling farther than any human mission in recent history before safely returning to Earth.
This mission will also be the first crewed test of NASA’s powerful Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft, both designed to take humans deeper into space for future lunar and Mars missions. The launch is currently targeted for April 1, with backup windows available in case of delays, as NASA teams continue final checks to ensure everything is mission-ready.
