A passenger was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly tried to open the emergency exit of a Batik Air flight travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi, Kerala. Authorities said an FIR has been registered against the passenger, who is also accused of damaging the emergency exit window panel during the flight.
The accused has been identified as Jamsheer Athanikkal, an Indian national from Kootannad in Kerala's Palakkad district, according to airport officials.
The incident occurred on Batik Air flight OD231, which was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi on Wednesday.
According to the FIR, the alleged incident took place while the aircraft was in the air between 9:30 pm and 11:05 pm.
Police said the passenger allegedly attempted to force open the aircraft's emergency exit, damaged the exit window panel, and threatened fellow passengers, creating a situation that endangered the safety of everyone on board.
Videos claiming to show the incident surfaced on social media after the aircraft landed in Kochi on Thursday.
The footage appears to show cabin crew members and fellow passengers trying to stop Jamsheer Athanikkal from opening the emergency exit. However, the authenticity of the videos has not been independently verified.
The case was registered following a complaint submitted by Batik Air's Security In-Charge at Kochi.
After the flight landed and passengers disembarked, CISF personnel took the accused into custody before handing him over to the Nedumbassery Police Station for further legal action.
Police have booked Jamsheer Athanikkal under the following provisions:
