Former England skipper Ben Stokes announced his departure from international cricket on June 28, 2026, at the age of 35, following the third Test against New Zealand. While retiring at 35 is somewhat traditional in cricket, many athletes now extend their careers beyond this, possibly influenced by age and physical fitness. This decision also followed a nightclub incident that resulted in his suspension for the second Test.
Just weeks after his retirement, Stokes made a striking return, scoring a century off 123 balls for Durham against Derbyshire in the England One Day Cup on July 21, steering his team to a solid five-wicket victory.
Following the game, Durham's head coach, Ryan Campbell, confirmed that Stokes is set to participate in most of the remaining One-Day Cup and County Championship fixtures.
Campbell remarked: "He is now a retired Test superstar who has rejoined us... He is going to play in every game we can arrange for him."
Campbell also hinted that Stokes might consider a return to franchise cricket down the line.
He mentioned: "Listening to him, there are certain franchise leagues he’s interested in exploring, along with our commitments, which should bring him excitement."
While the Indian Premier League (IPL) wasn’t specifically named, the remarks suggest Stokes is contemplating franchise opportunities.
Stokes last featured in the IPL in 2023 with Chennai Super Kings, playing just two matches due to injury. After missing the 2024 IPL auction, he has now served the two-year ban per BCCI rules and is eligible to register for the IPL 2027 mini auction should he choose to return.
Despite his openness to franchise cricket, Stokes opted not to enter the 2026 The Hundred competition, instead focusing on his fitness and domestic commitments with Durham.
