Bruins Aim to Recover After 7-2 Loss to Senators

Bruins Aim to Recover After 7-2 Loss to Senators

Post by : Maya Rahman

The Boston Bruins faced a tough night in Ottawa, losing 7-2 to the Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre. Head coach Marco Sturm described the match as “very disappointing,” admitting that the team underperformed in every aspect. The defeat marked one of their heaviest losses of the season, leaving fans and players equally frustrated.

The Bruins started with promise as Morgan Geekie gave them an early lead at 3:06 in the first period. He picked up the puck at the offensive blue line, dashed towards the goal, and fired a clean shot past Ottawa goalie Leevi Meriläinen. It was Geekie’s fifth goal in four games and his seventh this season, showing his impressive form despite the team’s struggles.

The Senators bounced back quickly, capitalizing on power plays that exposed Boston’s defensive gaps. Drake Batherson tied the game at 10:25 after netting a rebound, and Claude Giroux tipped in another to make it 2-1 early in the second period. Batherson struck again later with a strong wrist shot, pushing Ottawa ahead 3-1 and setting the tone for the rest of the game.

The third period completely belonged to Ottawa. The Senators scored four more times, including three goals on power plays. Tim Stützle netted twice, while Nick Cousins and Fabian Zetterlund extended the lead to 7-1. Boston’s defensive discipline collapsed, with multiple penalties leading directly to goals against. The Bruins could not find a rhythm and struggled to regain control of the puck.

Viktor Arvidsson added a consolation goal for Boston with just 9.7 seconds left on the clock, making it 7-2. It was his second goal in two games, showing some consistency even in a difficult outing. However, the effort came too late to influence the result. The team acknowledged that discipline and focus were the main issues that cost them the game.

After the game, several Bruins players spoke about the frustration and disappointment they felt. “It’s a slap to the face. We are the Boston Bruins. That is unacceptable,” said Nikita Zadorov. Morgan Geekie expressed similar sentiments, saying, “We put them on the power play five times, and they scored four of them. You’re shooting yourselves in the foot.”

Head coach Marco Sturm told the players to forget this match quickly and focus on the next one. “You don’t have to think about too much here right now. Just move forward,” he said. Sturm emphasized that the team must respond strongly when they return home to face the New York Islanders the following night at TD Garden.

Goalie Jeremy Swayman, who started his seventh game of the season and made 17 saves, also took responsibility for the performance. “It’s not who we are,” he said. “This is a one-off. We have to move forward and focus on tomorrow’s game.” Swayman remains confident that the Bruins can quickly bounce back from this setback.

The upcoming game against the Islanders gives the Bruins an immediate chance to show improvement. Playing at home offers an opportunity to reconnect with fans and demonstrate resilience. The players have vowed to deliver a performance that restores pride and reaffirms their high standards.

Despite the loss, the Boston Bruins remain focused on their long-term goals. The team understands that every game counts, especially in a competitive league. With the home crowd behind them, the Bruins aim to return to their winning ways and prove that the defeat in Ottawa was just a temporary stumble.
