A group of Buddhist monks from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Laos completed a remarkable spiritual journey across Indonesia as they approached the world-famous Borobudur Temple in Central Java ahead of the Waisak celebrations. The pilgrimage, known as Thudong, carried a powerful message of peace, harmony, and spiritual reflection.
A total of 58 monks participated in the journey, which began on May 9 at the Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist Temple in Buleleng, Bali. Over a period of twenty days, the monks traveled approximately 666 kilometers entirely on foot, passing through numerous cities and communities across Bali, East Java, and Central Java before reaching Magelang.
This year's pilgrimage was held under the theme “Walk for Peace,” highlighting the importance of compassion, tolerance, and unity in an increasingly complex world. Along the route, local residents warmly welcomed the monks, offering support, food, and encouragement as they continued their spiritual mission.
The journey took the monks through Banyuwangi, Pasuruan, Sidoarjo, Surabaya, Gresik, Mojokerto, Jepara, Demak, Semarang, Surakarta, and Klaten before finally arriving at Borobudur Temple. Police officers, volunteers, and local communities assisted in ensuring the safety and smooth progress of the pilgrimage throughout the route.
The arrival of the monks at Borobudur carries special significance as Buddhists around the world prepare to celebrate Waisak, one of the most sacred events in Buddhism. The occasion commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became known as the Buddha.
Borobudur Temple, recognized as the largest Buddhist temple in the world, serves as the spiritual center of Waisak celebrations in Indonesia. Thousands of devotees, monks, and visitors gather annually at the historic monument to participate in prayers, meditation, and religious ceremonies.
Religious leaders emphasized that the Thudong pilgrimage is not only a spiritual exercise but also a symbol of peace and understanding among nations. The participation of monks from multiple countries demonstrated the shared values of Buddhism and the importance of fostering friendship across borders.
As the monks completed their long journey, their message of peace resonated strongly with communities along the route. The pilgrimage once again highlighted the enduring role of faith, compassion, and cultural unity in bringing people together and inspiring hope for a more harmonious world.
