Family members of Ryden Brogden stormed out of a Calgary courtroom on Wednesday, outraged to hear that the man responsible for their loved one's fatal stabbing would serve no jail time.
John Sproule, 23, received a conditional sentence of two years of house arrest, followed by two years of probation. This sentence follows his conviction for manslaughter related to the September 2022 stabbing death of 27-year-old Brogden outside a Banff bar.
Justice Johanna Price noted that the incident was characterized as “near self-defence”, highlighting that Brogden initiated the confrontation. Surveillance footage captured Brogden delivering a surprise punch to Sproule, pulling his shirt over his head, and launching a series of assaults while threatening to kill him. In response, Sproule, then 20, drew a folding knife, resulting in 19 stab and slash injuries.
Although acknowledging Sproule's self-defence claim, Justice Price stated he exhibited “more force than necessary”. She recognized Sproule's remorse and the “exceptional circumstances”, adding that incarceration would not change the outcome for Ryden.
While prosecutors sought a five- to six-year prison sentence, defence lawyers recommended either a conditional sentence or an 18-month incarceration.
The judge concluded that Sproule does not pose a threat to the community. Beyond his house arrest, he is required to complete 240 hours of community service.
Emotions ran high in the courtroom as Brogden’s family reacted to the verdict, some members murmuring in disbelief as they exited.
Following the ruling, Sproule was seen embracing his mother, brother, and girlfriend.
