12-Year-Old Boy Critically Injured in Rare Shark Attack at Sydney Beach

12-Year-Old Boy Critically Injured in Rare Shark Attack at Sydney Beach

Post by : Meena Ariff

A 12-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being attacked by a large shark while swimming at Shark Beach in Sydney Harbour. The boy was with a group of friends, jumping off a six-metre rock ledge when the shark suddenly struck on Sunday.

He sustained severe injuries to both legs and was immediately pulled from the water by his friends, who acted quickly to save him. Their brave and quick response gave the boy a chance at survival, according to authorities.

Despite its name, Shark Beach is rarely the site of such attacks, making this incident particularly shocking for the local community. The injuries witnessed were severe, but the close bond among the friends and their swift action were praised as heroic.

Marine police arrived to find a harrowing scene. They rushed the boy onto a police speedboat, applying tourniquets to control the heavy bleeding while trying to resuscitate him. The boat sped towards an ambulance waiting at the nearby wharf to get him to a hospital as fast as possible.

Experts believe the shark involved was a bull shark, a species known for its aggressive behavior and presence in warm, shallow waters near the coast. Heavy rainfall and resulting changes in water conditions may have created a “perfect storm,” attracting the shark closer to shore.

Adding to recent worries, another shark attack occurred on Monday at Dee Why Beach when a shark bit off a surfboard. Fortunately, the 11-year-old surfer escaped without injury.

Australia is famous for its stunning beaches but is also one of the countries with the highest number of shark attacks. Last year, at least five fatal attacks were recorded, highlighting the ongoing risks beachgoers face.

Authorities are urging swimmers and surfers to stay cautious and be aware of water conditions, especially after heavy rains that may increase shark activity near popular swimming spots.
