World’s Largest Purple Star Sapphire ‘Star of Pure Land’ Unveiled

World’s Largest Purple Star Sapphire ‘Star of Pure Land’ Unveiled

Post by : Meena Ariff

A stunning Purple Star Sapphire weighing an incredible 3,563 carats has been unveiled in Sri Lanka’s capital, believed to be the largest natural purple star sapphire ever documented. Named the “Star of Pure Land,” this rare gemstone is drawing global attention for its exceptional size and unique features.

The gem, shaped in a perfect round form, exhibits a striking six-rayed asterism — a star-like pattern visible on its surface when light hits it. This remarkable feature sets it apart from other star sapphires and makes it truly special. Expert gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe confirmed its unmatched status, saying, “This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind, showing a well-defined six-ray star.”

Discovered in 2023 in a gem pit near Rathnapura, a remote town famously known as the “city of gems” in Sri Lanka, the stone was purchased alongside other precious gems. After nearly two years, its true value and rarity were recognized, leading to certification by two independent gemological laboratories.

The owners, who have chosen to remain anonymous for security reasons, have set the sapphire’s value between $300 million and $400 million based on assessments from international experts. Sri Lankan sapphires are celebrated worldwide for their vivid color, clarity, and natural shimmer, adding to the gem’s immense prestige.

The “Star of Pure Land” is now ready to be offered for sale, promising to become a historic treasure for collectors and investors alike.
