Canada has voiced strong condemnation of the politically charged conviction of Jimmy Lai, a prominent pro-democracy activist and media figure in Hong Kong, urging for his prompt release.
The 78-year-old, who founded the now-defunct Apple Daily, was convicted of collusion with foreign entities to threaten national security and of publishing seditious materials under Hong Kong’s restrictive national security law enacted by China. After spending five years in custody, Lai now faces the possibility of life in prison.
Anita Anand, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, emphasized serious concerns regarding the degradation of rights and freedoms in Hong Kong, labeling Lai’s case as “politically motivated.”
Lai’s health has reportedly worsened during his time in isolation. His daughter Claire noted that her father is focused on reuniting with family and achieving peace.
International leaders, including those from the U.S. and U.K., have raised alarms, advocating for Lai’s release on humanitarian grounds. Canadian activists are calling for Ottawa to implement diplomatic measures, including sanctions against Hong Kong officials involved in political oppression.
Lai’s situation has emerged as a critical symbol in the global discourse on press freedom, human rights, and the independence of the judiciary in Hong Kong amid escalating Chinese influence.
