The Supreme Court of India has strongly criticized the West Bengal government after seven judicial officers were held hostage for nearly nine hours during a protest in Malda district. The incident occurred outside the Kaliachak II Block Development Office amid tensions over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
According to reports, protesters surrounded the office after their request to meet the officials was denied. The situation escalated when the officers, including three women and a child, were confined inside the premises. The officials were eventually rescued late at night after police intervention, with reports of stone-pelting and road blockades during the evacuation.
Taking serious note of the incident, the Supreme Court described the situation as a “criminal failure” and called West Bengal a highly polarized state. The court directed the Election Commission to ensure the safety of judicial officers by deploying central forces and ordered that the investigation be handed over to agencies like the CBI or NIA.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions ahead of the state assembly elections. The court also summoned senior state officials, including the chief secretary and police leadership, seeking accountability and a detailed explanation for the security lapse.
