Dhaka, Bangladesh – Following a significant 5.5-magnitude earthquake that struck on Friday, the death toll in Bangladesh has tragically climbed to 10, with hundreds more sustaining injuries. Saturday morning brought a new tremor, measured at 3.3 on the Richter scale, instigating renewed fear among the populace.
This minor quake hit Ashulia, just north of Dhaka, at 10:36 am local time, as reported by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. While it did not inflict as much damage as the preceding quake, the tremor unsettled residents and exacerbated anxieties in the capital city.
In Ashulia and neighboring areas, numerous homes, already compromised by Friday’s quake, now exhibit fresh cracks. Residents spent Saturday morning retrieving belongings and assessing the damage. Shahnaj Parvin, 44, described how she clung to a mahogany tree amid the tremors, only to return home and find her glassware shattered and walls damaged.
The government has activated its emergency operation center to evaluate the situation and coordinate rescue and relief initiatives. While the tremor on Saturday caused no additional casualties, it highlighted Bangladesh’s susceptibility to seismic hazards.
Experts point out that Bangladesh's geographical context renders it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. Expectations of smaller aftershocks following significant quakes, compounded by dense urbanization, aging infrastructure, and a lack of readiness, have intensified public fear.
