Honoring Selena: A New Netflix Documentary Explores Her Family's Memories

Honoring Selena: A New Netflix Documentary Explores Her Family's Memories

Post by : Meena Ariff

Three decades have passed since the untimely death of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who left an indelible mark on Latin music and culture. A fresh documentary titled Selena Y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, directed by Isabel Castro with the collaboration of Selena’s siblings, Suzette and AB Quintanilla III, attempts to encapsulate her enduring legacy. The film is set to debut on Netflix this Monday.

“Who better than us to narrate our story?” remarks Suzette Quintanilla, highlighting the necessity of a familial viewpoint.

The endeavor commenced when the Quintanilla family sought out Castro after being impressed by her 2022 work, Mija. “Suzette and I instantly clicked,” shares Castro. “As fellow older sisters, we shared an understanding of the dual identities that come with being Mexican American.”

This documentary utilizes a rich assortment of archival material, affectionately labeled by Suzette as “the vault.” Over time, Castro and the Quintanillas meticulously combed through DVDs, VHS tapes, raw film canisters, and digital files to select the most poignant footage eliciting Selena’s journey not just as a performer, but as a sister, daughter, and friend.

Among the heartfelt treasures are home videos captured by Suzette, a touching handwritten letter from Selena to her husband Chris Pérez, and cherished moments from the family band’s inaugural tour bus, affectionately named Big Bertha. Even Marcella Quintanilla, Selena’s mother, who has remained largely silent about her daughter, opens up for this project, sharing precious memories and photographs.

Castro views this documentary as a chance to portray Selena as a young individual, not merely a cultural figure. “Watching the home videos reminded me that she was just 23 when she left us,” reflects Castro.

While previous films—like the biopic featuring Jennifer Lopez from 1997 and a 2020 Netflix series—have chronicled Selena’s life and demise, this documentary consciously steers clear of her murder. “Our focus isn’t on the tragedy,” Castro states. “We celebrate a Latina’s joy and empowerment. This is about her life, our lives, and our evolution as individuals.”

The film also delves into lesser-known narratives of Selena’s journey: her bilingual abilities, bicultural identity, rise within the music industry, and her marriage to Pérez, which raised eyebrows in the family. By relying solely on interviews from the Quintanilla family and Los Dinos members, the documentary crafts a deeply personal narrative devoid of external commentary.

Through this film, Suzette aims to inspire Latino audiences and the younger generation. “It enriches her legacy, our family legacy,” she shares. “And we hope it motivates anyone with a dream to pursue it relentlessly.”

Selena Y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy is a tribute to life, music, and the lasting influence of an icon whose impact echoes across generations.
