China hosted the world’s first-ever humanoid robot mixed martial arts (MMA) fight during the Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend (URKL) competition, organized by Chinese robotics company EngineAI. The event took place at the Shenzhen Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center and was attended by renowned film star Donnie Yen, according to Global Times.
The competition was organized to demonstrate the capabilities of EngineAI’s full-sized humanoid robot, the T800, which is designed for hand-to-hand combat.
The T800 humanoid robot served as the standard fighting platform for all participating teams. Each team was required to use the same base robot while creating custom armor and making engineering improvements to enhance its combat performance.
The competition highlighted the robot’s ability to perform advanced fighting movements while showcasing improvements in robotics engineering and control systems.
The URKL competition attracted more than 200 teams from 10 countries during the initial entry stage. Following online qualification rounds, 32 finalist teams advanced to the main event.
According to Guangdong News, participating teams represented leading institutions including the University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, and the University of Hong Kong.
The total prize pool for the competition was 10 million yuan, equivalent to approximately $1.48 million.
Rather than focusing only on combat performance, judges assessed the robots across several technical areas. These included:
These evaluation categories measured both engineering quality and overall robot performance during the competition.
Before the official competition, EngineAI promoted the URKL event with a demonstration featuring the T800 humanoid robot and kickboxing and Muay Thai legend Buakaw Banchamek in February 2026.
The demonstration showcased the robot performing striking and sparring movements as part of preparations for the tournament.
According to Chinese media outlet China Focus, the 2026 URKL season is an ongoing, tiered robotics competition that will continue through the end of the year.
The Shenzhen event marked the opening competition of the season and was the first in a series of tournaments that will determine the overall URKL champion.
