The Metropolitan Museum of Art has consistently highlighted a central theme in its blockbuster fashion exhibitions: the notion that fashion is indeed an art form. With its new upcoming exhibition, the museum aims to elevate this concept to a more immersive experience.
In conjunction with the glamorous 2026 Met Gala festivities, the exhibition titled “Costume Art” seeks to create a literal bridge between the worlds of fashion and fine art. Attendees can expect an engaging display that matches garments with art pieces from the museum’s extensive collection, illustrating the long-standing relationship between fashion and various art forms, including paintings, sculptures, and decorative art.
Max Hollein, the Met's CEO and Director, remarked in an interview that the exhibition intends to guide visitors on a “fashionable journey spanning art history,” showcasing intersections among different artistic mediums.
“It’s a show that is set to invigorate the museum and can draw from a multitude of our collection’s areas,” Hollein stated.
Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, noted that the layout of the exhibition will follow thematic elements centered around distinct body types. Featured sections will encompass the “Naked Body,” “Classical Body,” and unexpected themes like the “Pregnant Body” and “Aging Body,” highlighting the varied representations of bodies in both fashion and art.
A notable example from the “Naked Body” section includes a 1504 print by German artist Albrecht Dürer, paired with 2009 spandex bodysuits by Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck, creatively reflecting the narrative of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. This pairing perfectly symbolizes the exhibition’s objective to intertwine historical artistry with modern fashion design.
Ballerina Misty Copeland, a recent retiree from the American Ballet Theatre, expressed her thoughts on the relationship between fashion and dance. She believes the exhibition makes a compelling statement about the body in all its forms as an art piece, deserving of recognition and celebration.
“Fashion and dance have traditionally celebrated an ‘ideal’ body, predominantly thin, white, and female,” Copeland shared. “Standing as a Black woman and a ballerina felt paradoxical at times. Yet, I strongly affirm the value and beauty of my body, as well as the diverse bodies of many Black and brown dancers who often go unnoticed.”
The exhibition is set to welcome the public starting May 10 in its new location, the Conde M. Nast Galleries, which span approximately 12,000 square feet (1,115 square meters) adjacent to the museum’s Great Hall. This relocation aims to provide fashion with a more significant presence while enhancing the visitor experience by reducing congestion and lengthy lines that previously encroached upon other gallery spaces.
Hollein shared that the new galleries will host not just upcoming Costume Institute exhibitions but also showcases from different departments within the museum, contributing to a more cohesive visitor experience.
Bolton referred to the new gallery as “a pivotal moment for the department, recognizing the vital role of fashion not only within the continued narrative of art history but also within contemporary society.”
As the Met Gala approaches on May 4, celebrity attendees will be given a unique chance to explore this groundbreaking exhibit just steps away from their high-profile event, merging the realms of elite fashion, celebrity culture, and the museum's artistic heritage.
