Cumilla Gas Cylinder Blast Injures Four Two Critical

Cumilla Gas Cylinder Blast Injures Four Two Critical

Post by : Shakul

A gas cylinder exploded early on the morning of February 24, 2026, in a residential area of Daudkandi upazila, Cumilla, injuring four members of a single family. The blast occurred in their home kitchen around 6:00 AM, prompting a rapid response from local authorities and rescue teams.

The injured — Monowara (60), Zill Haque (37), Umme Humayra (30), and toddler Hurram (2) — were immediately taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, the country’s leading facility for severe burn cases. Monowara sustained 2 % burns and is stable, while Zill Haque and Umme Humayra suffered 54 % and 65 % burns respectively and remain in critical condition. Hurram has 6 % burns and is stable under pediatric care.

Dr. Shawon bin Rahman, a surgeon at the burn institute, said the critical injuries of Zill Haque and Umme Humayra require ongoing monitoring due to risks of infection and heat loss. Local police, led by Officer‑in‑Charge Abdul Hanif, have registered a case and are investigating the cause, with initial reports suggesting a possible leak due to a faulty regulator or improper installation.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud explosion that shattered windows and caused panic. Several residents rushed to help the family and alert authorities as smoke and flames emerged from the house.

The incident has raised concerns about household gas safety, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where LPG cylinders are commonly used. Authorities and safety experts have urged residents to follow proper safety guidelines, maintain cylinders, check regulators regularly, and ensure proper kitchen ventilation to prevent similar accidents.
