Delhi is once again grappling with alarming levels of air pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has surged beyond 300 in several areas, categorizing it as “very poor” and even “hazardous.” In some early morning hours, readings surpassed 700 in certain locales, indicating an abundance of harmful particles that pose respiratory risks.
Many residents assume that shutting all windows and staying indoors ensures safety, but experts caution that indoor air can be equally contaminated. Substances from cleaning agents, smoke, dust, damp surfaces, pets, and even certain furniture materials can compromise indoor air quality.
Dr. Sachin Kumar, a pulmonologist based in Bengaluru, has offered 10 straightforward methods designed to purify indoor air and safeguard your family’s well-being. His recommendations are simple and do not require drastic lifestyle changes.
According to Dr. Kumar, inhaling contaminated air allows tiny particles and gases to invade our bodies. Such exposure can lead to issues like coughing, asthma, diminished oxygen levels, lung infections, cardiovascular problems, and even heightened cancer risk over time. Vulnerable groups include children, the elderly, and pregnant women. Homes with high moisture or insufficient ventilation often trap pollutants indoors.
To mitigate these dangers, Dr. Kumar recommends steering clear of cigarette smoke inside the home. Residual smoke particles can cling to clothing and furniture, still posing a threat even in the absence of active smoking. He suggests opting for solid wood furniture rather than low-quality alternatives bonded with chemical adhesives. When using potent cleaning supplies like bleach or glass cleaners, wearing a mask can shield the lungs from noxious vapors.
Employing an air purifier equipped with a HEPA filter can eliminate up to 99% of dust and pollutants from the air. Opening windows during periods of lower outdoor pollution can enhance ventilation. Addressing dampness in the household is critical, as moisture can foster mold and fungi, aggravating respiratory conditions. Fans, dehumidifiers, and fixing leaks can effectively minimize humidity levels.
For pet owners, regular grooming and cleaning of pets help reduce dust and allergens within the home. Additionally, it's advisable to avoid using wood for indoor heating or cooking due to the toxic fumes it emits; electric or solar heaters serve as safer alternatives. Incorporating certain houseplants, such as aloe vera, peace lily, and snake plant, can also contribute to improved air quality.
Given the severe outdoor air pollution, ensuring a healthier indoor environment is imperative. Implementing these minor adjustments can significantly enhance lung health and promote family well-being. While comprehensive solutions require governmental intervention and structural changes, each household has the opportunity to create a safer indoor atmosphere.
