Doctor Who Supplied Ketamine to Matthew Perry Sentenced to Jail

Doctor Who Supplied Ketamine to Matthew Perry Sentenced to Jail

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Salvador Plasencia, the doctor who supplied ketamine to American actor and comedian Matthew Perry in the months before his tragic death, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison in California. Perry, best known for his iconic role as Chandler Bing in the hit TV series "Friends," died in October 2023 at the age of 54. Plasencia’s sentencing marks the first conviction among five individuals involved in providing the actor with the drug.

Prosecutors revealed that Plasencia sold ketamine to Perry, who had long battled addiction, at significantly inflated prices. The court heard evidence that the doctor had casually mused to a fellow physician about “how much this moron will pay” for the substance. While Plasencia did not supply the fatal dose, Perry’s parents, Suzanne Perry and Keith Morrison, emphasized in a victim impact statement that he had failed in his duty as a medical professional. They expressed deep disappointment that a doctor, entrusted with helping people, prioritized profit over patient care.

Plasencia, 44, surrendered his medical license and expressed remorse for his actions. His attorneys highlighted that he made serious mistakes in using ketamine off-label for depression treatment, a substance that does not have uniform medical standards, and stressed that he was not a villain. “The mistakes he made over the 13 days during which he treated Mr. Perry will stay with him forever,” his lawyers stated.

The case has revealed disturbing details about Perry’s final months. Another doctor, Mark Chavez, admitted in October to conspiring to distribute ketamine to Perry. Prosecutors stated that Plasencia obtained ketamine from Chavez and then sold it to Perry at highly inflated prices. Text messages presented in court included Plasencia’s remark about Perry’s willingness to pay large sums for the drug.

Other individuals involved in supplying drugs to Perry, including the alleged "Ketamine Queen" Jasveen Sangha, are facing charges that could result in decades of imprisonment. Perry’s live-in personal assistant and another associate previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges related to ketamine distribution.

Matthew Perry’s struggles with addiction were widely known. Despite the fame and fortune brought by his role on "Friends," Perry endured a long battle with alcohol and prescription drug addiction. His challenges included a drug-related colon rupture in 2018 and numerous attempts at detox over the years. In his 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing," Perry recounted his struggles with substance abuse and reflected on his efforts to maintain sobriety, writing that he had been mostly sober since 2001, apart from about sixty or seventy minor relapses.

Authorities launched a criminal investigation following Perry’s death after an autopsy revealed high levels of ketamine in his system. The actor had been using ketamine as part of a supervised therapy program for depression, but prosecutors noted that he developed an addiction, which contributed to his tragic demise.

Plasencia’s sentencing is a significant step in the ongoing investigation into the deaths and illegal drug distribution surrounding Matthew Perry. While the actor’s fans continue to mourn his passing, the court’s decision highlights accountability for medical professionals who exploit vulnerable patients.
