Elon Musk's Trillionaire Status Evaporates Amid SpaceX Stock Decline

Elon Musk's Trillionaire Status Evaporates Amid SpaceX Stock Decline

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Elon Musk has lost his title as the world's first trillionaire due to a steep decline in SpaceX's valuation, which has led to a significant reduction in his personal wealth. Current estimates from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index show Musk's net worth at about $957 billion, a reduction from his peak of $1.32 trillion on June 16.

This downturn can be largely attributed to a drop in SpaceX's market value, which has cost Musk an estimated $363 billion. Despite this setback, he still comfortably holds the title of the richest person globally.

A Surge Thanks to SpaceX's IPO

Musk's wealth surged dramatically when SpaceX had a record-setting initial public offering (IPO) on June 12, raising $75 billion and elevating its valuation to nearly $1.77 trillion.

The excitement surrounding the company led to share prices soaring to $225.64, pushing SpaceX's valuation briefly close to $2 trillion and making Musk the first to surpass the $1 trillion mark.

However, this impressive rise was not sustained.

SpaceX Shares Drop by Nearly 31%

Since those peak values, SpaceX shares have plummeted to around $156, marking a drop of nearly 31 percent.

Monday's trading session saw shares dive more than 16 percent, significantly impacting the company's overall valuation and directly affecting Musk's wealth.

Planned Bond Sale Increases Pressure

This slide in share prices followed an announcement from SpaceX that it plans to raise $25 billion through its inaugural investment-grade bond offering.

The capital raised will support artificial intelligence projects and help refinance debts linked to Musk's wider business interests, including social media platform X and AI company xAI.

SpaceX's Financial Outlook

S&P Global Ratings anticipates that SpaceX will experience negative cash flow through 2029.

Despite this predicted financial strain, the company is growing, benefitting from revenues through its Starlink satellite internet service and government contracts.

Tesla's Decline Also Weighs on Musk's Net Worth

Musk's overall wealth has also been impacted by Tesla's stock performance.

Shares of the electric vehicle maker have decreased over 4 percent since June 16 and have seen a more than 7 percent drop for the year, adding additional pressures on Musk's financial standing.

Musk Still Retains Richest Status

Even after losing his status as a trillionaire, Musk remains the wealthiest individual in the world.

Current estimates place Google co-founder Larry Page's net worth around $297 billion, with fellow co-founder Sergey Brin at approximately $276 billion.

Potential Insider Share Sales on the Horizon

In the coming months, SpaceX may face important developments.

Insider shares could potentially be sold before the official lockup period concludes in December. If more shares flood the market, analysts predict it may further pressure stock prices, influencing both the company's valuation and Musk's net worth.
