Malaysia Football Body Resigns After FIFA Sanctions Over Player Row

Malaysia Football Body Resigns After FIFA Sanctions Over Player Row

Post by : Meena Ariff

In a dramatic development that has shaken Malaysian football, the entire executive committee of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) resigned on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, following a major controversy involving the naturalization of seven foreign-born players.

The committee members, who were elected just 11 months ago for the 2025–2029 term, stepped down unanimously and with immediate effect. The decision was described as voluntary and aimed at protecting the credibility, integrity and future of Malaysian football.

The mass resignation came months after FIFA imposed strict sanctions on FAM. In September 2025, FIFA fined the association approximately $450,000 and handed one-year suspensions to seven players after concluding that falsified documents had been submitted to justify their eligibility to play for Malaysia. Each of the players was also fined individually.

The players involved—Facundo Garcés, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, João Figueiredo, Gabriel Palmero, Jon Irazabal and Héctor Hevel—originate from Argentina, Brazil, the Netherlands and Spain. They had represented Malaysia in international competitions, including a 2027 Asian Cup qualifying match in which Malaysia secured a victory over Vietnam.

Malaysian football officials had consistently maintained that the players met FIFA eligibility requirements, claiming each had a Malaysian-born grandparent. However, FIFA investigators obtained original records from the players’ home countries that contradicted those claims, leading to disciplinary action.

In its official statement, FAM said resigning before completing the four-year mandate demonstrated that serving the interests of Malaysian football was more important than holding positions of power. The association stated that the move was necessary to safeguard its reputation and prevent further damage to the sport.

The resignation is also intended to allow FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation to conduct a comprehensive review of FAM’s governance, administrative processes and internal procedures without interference or conflict of interest. FAM emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in preserving institutional integrity.

The outgoing leadership said it would fully cooperate with international football authorities to restore confidence among fans, stakeholders and the wider football community. No timeline has been announced for interim leadership or fresh elections.

Acting FAM president Mohamad Yusoff Mahadi confirmed that secretary-general Noor Azman Rahman will continue managing daily operations. A special congress is expected to be convened to appoint a new executive committee.

Meanwhile, FAM continues its legal battle against FIFA. After its initial appeal was rejected, the association took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. On January 27, 2026, FAM announced that the court had temporarily suspended the FIFA-imposed ban on the seven players, allowing them to play while the appeal is under review. A final verdict has not yet been scheduled.

This unprecedented resignation marks one of the most significant governance crises in Malaysian football history and places the future direction of the sport firmly under international scrutiny.
