Kyiv: Heightened Russian air assaults within the last day have exacerbated the situation in northeastern Ukraine, leading to the deaths of four individuals and injuring 11 others, as reported by local authorities.
On Saturday, Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov confirmed that the strikes primarily affected Kharkiv city and 11 nearby areas, inflicting extensive damage.
Drone Incident in Sumy Inflicts Casualties
In another overnight incident, a Russian drone attack on a residential structure in the Sumy region injured at least 11 people, including a child.
According to Ukraine’s emergency services, a 16-storey apartment building and adjacent homes were damaged. Residents were evacuated quickly as firefighters worked to control the flames.
Investigations are underway by authorities to assess damage and gather evidence pertaining to potential war crimes.
Ukrainian Forces Intercept Most Drones
The Ukrainian Air Force reported they successfully intercepted or neutralized 260 of the 286 drones launched across several areas, including the north, south, east, and central regions of the country.
However, 11 drones successfully struck 10 locations, and debris from intercepted drones was found in six additional areas.
Strikes Trigger Casualties in Russia
Meanwhile, in southern Russia, drone and missile strikes in the Rostov region resulted in one death and four critical injuries.
Governor Yury Slyusar indicated that the incident occurred in Taganrog, hitting a commercial establishment and igniting a fire. Emergency personnel evacuated locals and managed to stabilize the situation.
Additionally, falling debris from drones ignited a blaze on a foreign-flagged cargo ship in the Sea of Azov, a crucial shipping channel linking Russia and Ukraine.
Diplomatic Efforts Stalled
Ongoing diplomatic initiatives aiming to conclude the conflict, which started in February 2022, have faced numerous obstacles. Multiple discussions involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine have not yielded any significant progress.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently suggested a ceasefire during the Easter period, which Russia dismissed as a mere publicity tactic.
Moscow persists in seeking control over extensive areas of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, a demand that Kyiv has consistently rejected, citing constitutional limitations and continuous resistance on the battlefield.
