flydubai Introduces Its Inaugural Sustainability Report and Future ESG Framework

Post by : Badri Ariffin

The Dubai-based airline flydubai has made a significant commitment by unveiling its inaugural Sustainability Report for 2025. Entitled "fly forward 2025," this report lays out a comprehensive five-year strategy aimed at enhancing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices while preparing for the airline's future growth.

Developed in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards, the report aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is organized around six fundamental ESG pillars, focusing on minimizing environmental impact, supporting local communities, enhancing governance, and boosting operational efficiency.

Comprehensive Sustainability Strategy Supported by ESG Analysis

In 2025, flydubai conducted its first complete double materiality assessment, evaluating two critical facets:

  • Impact materiality, which assesses how the airline’s actions affect the environment and society.
  • Financial materiality, which looks at how sustainability considerations might impact the airline’s business performance and overall value.

The insights gathered from this assessment informed the development of a five-year sustainability framework, complete with specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track progress and direct future endeavors.

Sheikh Ahmed Emphasizes a Commitment to Future Generations

Upon the launch of the report, H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai, remarked that the airline's role goes beyond immediate operations and into the future. He stated, "Leading a forward-thinking airline carries a responsibility not just to our current markets but to future generations who will face the consequences of today's decisions. This first Sustainability Report embodies that commitment and our aim to integrate it into the core governance of the airline. With the UAE’s vision for a sustainable, net-zero future, we are dedicated to pursuing growth that aligns with national aspirations and honors our legacy."

He further emphasized that the release of this report is a crucial milestone, underscoring flydubai's ongoing support for Dubai's status as a premier global aviation hub through responsible practices.

CEO Affirms Sustainability as Key to Future Development

Ghaith Al Ghaith, the CEO of flydubai, highlighted the importance of sustainability in guiding the airline’s long-term vision. He stated, "Sustainability remains at the heart of flydubai’s strategic decisions as we strive to establish a resilient and responsible future. This initial Sustainability Report signifies a critical milestone, reflecting our progress and the roadmap we’re following for responsible expansion. In 2025, we completed our first thorough sustainability analysis, establishing a focused five-year strategy that allows us to leverage our strengths where we can have the most substantial impact. These initiatives are essential for building an organization equipped to adapt to changing industry and regulatory landscapes."

Key Elements of the “fly forward 2025” Strategy

The sustainability framework is centered around six essential pillars that will steer the future initiatives of flydubai.

Climate-Resilient Operations

The airline is committed to enhancing energy efficiency and reducing emissions in its everyday operations to contribute to climate action.

Environmental Responsibility

flydubai aims to minimize its ecological footprint through sustainable resource management, waste reduction, and protection of wildlife.

People-Centric Approach

The airline will continue to invest in its workforce, support local communities, and improve connectivity for the markets it serves.

Unified Efforts

flydubai will collaborate closely with suppliers who share its ethos, strengthen partnerships with organizations that create positive social impacts, and continue its community support initiatives across its operational network.

Commitment to Safety, Compliance, and Service Excellence

The airline is committed to upholding stringent safety management practices, regulatory compliance, and offering a consistent customer experience throughout each travel phase.

Innovative Aviation

Technological advancements will be pivotal in utilizing digital tools, artificial intelligence, and data analytics to enhance fuel efficiency, improve safety, reduce environmental footprints, and ensure operational excellence.

Investing in Technology for Sustainable Development

The launch of this Sustainability Report signifies the start of flydubai's sustainability reporting journey, reinforcing its promise of continual enhancement and transparency.

Looking forward, the airline is enhancing its technological capabilities through a groundbreaking collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to incorporate generative artificial intelligence into its flight operations. Additionally, it is partnering with Starlink to provide exceptional broadband connectivity across its fleet.

With a robust order book of narrowbody aircraft and the upcoming delivery of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, flydubai is strategically positioned to connect more destinations with Dubai while pursuing efficient and responsible development.
