The Group of Seven summit in France has renewed debate over China's absence from one of the world's most influential economic and political gatherings. As leaders from the United States, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy and Canada meet in Evian-les-Bains, questions are being raised about whether major global issues can be fully addressed without direct participation from China.
China has transformed into the world's second-largest economy and plays a crucial role in global trade, manufacturing, technology and supply chains. Its economic influence now exceeds that of several G7 members combined, making it a central factor in discussions involving international commerce, industrial competition and financial stability.
Despite its economic weight, China remains outside the G7 due to the group's long-standing identity as a club of democratic nations. Analysts note that while China's participation could bring valuable perspectives on trade and economic challenges, significant political differences continue to separate Beijing from the world's leading democracies.
China is expected to remain a major topic throughout the summit. European leaders have expressed concerns over rising Chinese exports, industrial competition and supply chain dependencies. Discussions are also expected to focus on balancing trade relations while protecting domestic industries from growing international competition.
French President Emmanuel Macron has highlighted the need for coordinated approaches to global trade challenges. Several leaders believe stronger cooperation among G7 nations could help address concerns related to manufacturing, technology, strategic minerals and market access while maintaining economic stability.
Chinese officials have criticized the G7 in the past for being overly exclusive and reflective of Cold War-era divisions. However, Beijing also recognizes the influence that the group continues to hold over global economic and political affairs and closely monitors summit outcomes.
While some experts argue that including China could improve international cooperation, others warn that it could weaken the unity of the G7. As geopolitical competition intensifies, the debate over China's role in global decision-making is likely to remain a key issue in future international summits.
