French tennis star Gael Monfils, once ranked world number six, has confirmed that he will retire from professional tennis at the end of the 2026 season. The 39-year-old shared the emotional news on Wednesday through a heartfelt post on social media, where he thanked fans and reflected on his two-decade-long career.
Monfils has been celebrated for his athleticism, explosive energy, and entertaining style of play, often delighting tennis fans with his powerful shots, speed, and unique flair on court. Over his 21-year career, he has become one of the most loved and respected figures in the tennis world.
Gael Monfils began his professional journey in the early 2000s and quickly rose to prominence with his natural talent and extraordinary movement. He has claimed 13 ATP Tour titles in his career. His very first victory came in Poland in 2005, while his most recent triumph was at the Auckland Classic in January 2025. That win was historic, as Monfils became the oldest player to win an ATP Tour title at the age of 38 years and four months.

Monfils has also made a strong mark in Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the French Open semi-finals in 2008 and the U.S. Open semi-finals in 2016. Although he never managed to capture a Grand Slam trophy, his performances have earned him recognition as one of the most consistent and entertaining players of his era.
In his retirement message, Monfils wrote:
“Now, after celebrating my 39th birthday just a month ago, I’d like to share that the year ahead will be my last as a professional tennis player. The opportunity to turn my passion into a profession has been a privilege I have cherished during every match and moment of my career.”
He added that while tennis has been central to his life, he feels “at peace” with his decision and looks forward to the next chapter beyond the court.
“Life is too short,” Monfils said. “Believe me when I say that I have no regrets. What I do have is the feeling that I have been lucky – insanely, stupidly lucky.”
Monfils is not only known for his career achievements but also for his charisma, showmanship, and ability to connect with fans. His dynamic playing style and athletic moves have often been compared to acrobatic displays, making him one of the sport’s most entertaining stars.
Over the years, Monfils has become an inspiration for young players, showing how passion and hard work can lead to success and longevity in the highly competitive world of tennis. His retirement will mark the end of an era, as fans prepare to say goodbye to one of the sport’s most charismatic figures.
As Monfils prepares for his farewell season, he leaves behind a legacy of resilience, determination, and love for the game. His career, filled with memorable moments and historic achievements, will continue to inspire tennis enthusiasts around the world.
