Generation Z Sparks Uproar in PoK Over Education Policies

Generation Z Sparks Uproar in PoK Over Education Policies

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) is in upheaval as student protests led by Generation Z challenge the education policies of the Shehbaz Sharif government. The protests, fueled by anger over soaring university fees, ineffective exam systems, and dwindling opportunities, are developing into a significant political and social movement that extends beyond student circles.

The unrest began at the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (UAJK) in Muzaffarabad with hundreds of students rallying against steep tuition increases and confusing examination results. A newly implemented digital evaluation method for matriculation and intermediate exams led to upheaval, as many students reported receiving unusually low marks or being declared successful in subjects they did not take.

When results were finally disclosed after a six-month delay, student frustration escalated. Complaints surged from educational institutions across PoK, compelling authorities to establish a review panel. However, circumstances intensified when the government mandated a rechecking fee of Rs 1,500 per subject, perceived as exploitative by many, that exacerbated economic woes in a region already grappling with limited job opportunities.

The protests turned violent earlier this week when a man allegedly shot at demonstrators in Muzaffarabad, injuring one. Eyewitnesses have named Raja Mamoon Fahad as the shooter, who reportedly fired his weapon in the presence of police and then fled the scene, igniting public outrage and distrust towards the authorities.

Footage of the incident circulated widely on social media, further inciting protests and unifying citizen groups and student organizations against what they deem “state-backed repression.” Demonstrations are spreading across other areas of PoK as young activists call for justice, transparency, and government accountability.

The student-led movement in PoK draws parallels to recent Gen Z protests in Nepal, where youth mobilized against corruption and censorship after a government-mandated social media ban. Analysts highlight that both movements encapsulate a new generation’s frustration with systemic issues and neglect.

In response to widespread unrest, the Sharif government has ramped up security at university campuses and restricted student unions and political assemblies, raising concerns about free speech and democratic rights.

The Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) has expressed its full support for the student protests and cautioned that ongoing repression may lead to broader upheaval throughout Pakistan. Observers believe that the government's approach to this crisis will be crucial in determining whether the movement remains limited to PoK or evolves into a nationwide youth revolution.

The protests underscore a growing disenchantment among Pakistan’s young populace, who feel marginalized by stagnant economic conditions, scarce job prospects, and a failing educational framework. With videos and personal accounts spreading rapidly online, the Gen Z movement in PoK is garnering international attention as a symbol of resistance to injustice and ineffective governance.

As the region remains tense, the critical question looms: will Pakistan’s leaders engage with its youth, or will they continue to suppress calls for essential reforms?
