On June 25, Rockstar Games officially launched pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a base edition price of $80 and an Ultimate Edition priced at $100.
While fans can now secure their copies, Rockstar has not released any gameplay footage to the public. Up to this point, only two cinematic trailers have been made available, leaving potential customers to make a leap of faith by pre-ordering without glimpsing actual gameplay.
Trusting in GTA's Legacy
Rockstar has labeled GTA 6 as "the largest game launch in history." While the excitement surrounding the title is palpable, it is unusual for major titles to lack gameplay reveals prior to opening up pre-orders.
The starting price of $80 sets GTA 6 above the standard $70 for current AAA games. Earlier this year, Nintendo raised prices with Mario Kart World, and now Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has set a new higher price point for its premier franchise.
Industry analysts suggest Rockstar's established fanbase affords it the ability to command such pricing. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella remarked that Take-Two can do "just about anything" in terms of pricing for this franchise.
Players Expected to Trust the Brand
The GTA series has cultivated significant trust with its player community over time. GTA V, released in 2013, has brought in over $8 billion in overall revenue, with GTA Online remaining a consistent revenue source for over a decade.
Many fans perceive a GTA release as offering extensive gameplay hours, justifying the investment. Yet, with no gameplay footage accessible, players currently rely on two trailers, the release date of September 26, and the solid reputation of Rockstar.
Price Concerns for Gamers
The increased launch price raises affordability questions, particularly for those already feeling financial pressure.
Analyst Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics noted that high price points disproportionately impact those feeling strained. He highlighted that GTA Online remains the top revenue driver for Take-Two, and a raised entry price could hinder the player base at launch, affecting future microtransaction revenue.
GTA 6 Exclusively for Consoles
At its launch, GTA 6 will only be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rockstar has yet to announce a PC release date, meaning those on PC may face longer waiting periods. Additionally, individuals without current-gen consoles will need to consider the cost of new hardware before investing in the $80 game.
Gamers who pre-order via the PlayStation Store will receive a complimentary one-month GTA+ subscription.
Anticipation for a Third Trailer
Many enthusiasts hoped for Rockstar to unveil a third trailer, complete with gameplay footage, during the pre-order launch. However, that reveal has not yet taken place.
Currently, there is no confirmed date for Trailer 3's release, nor has Rockstar specified when gameplay footage will be shared.
As the September launch approaches, the absence of gameplay visibility is unusual for a title of such magnitude, as most blockbusters typically showcase extended gameplay between six to twelve months prior to their launch.
Take-Two's Forward-Looking Approach
Chris Dring from The Game Business mentioned players generally trust that a GTA title provides enduring value, a sentiment built over many years. However, Rockstar is asking for even greater trust by requesting fans to accept both a higher launch price and the lack of gameplay visibility prior to purchase.
The $80 Base Edition is just the entry point, while the Ultimate Edition, priced at $100, serves as a premium option. Some placeholder listings from European retailers briefly displayed higher figures, but those listings were later removed as unverified.
With GTA 6 set for release on September 26, all eyes are now on Rockstar to see if gameplay footage will be revealed in the weeks leading up to this eagerly awaited debut.
