Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has confirmed that the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft initiative remains fully stable and on course, despite the ongoing investigations into last week's tragic crash at the Dubai Airshow, which resulted in the loss of an Indian Air Force pilot. The incident on November 21 raised international concerns, but India’s defence aviation sector emphasizes that the aircraft's performance record stays robust.
During the National Security Summit hosted by ANI, HAL's Chairman and Managing Director D.K. Sunil characterized the Dubai crash as an “unfortunate occurrence” and highlighted that the LCA Tejas has consistently demonstrated its reliability through extensive testing and operational history. He expressed the company's “full confidence” in the fighter jet's capabilities and assured that ongoing production and future plans remain unchanged.
The Tejas engaged in multiple high-speed maneuvers at the Dubai Airshow before the single-engine aircraft tragically went down around 2:10 pm local time during an aerial performance. Wing Commander Namansh Syal, a respected IAF fighter pilot from Himachal Pradesh, lost his life, sending shockwaves through India’s defense community. The Indian Air Force has initiated a thorough investigation, scrutinizing technical logs, flight data, and communication records to ascertain the cause of the mishap.
In spite of this setback, HAL asserts that production schedules for the Tejas aircraft remain on track. The company has secured orders for 180 aircraft, and manufacturing is expected to expand with the introduction of new facilities. One obstacle has been the delayed engine deliveries from GE Aerospace, but HAL reassures that overall timelines remain unaffected.
With heightened interest in various regions, plans to export the Tejas are still very much in progress, with officials stating that ramping up capacity will facilitate the entry of the indigenous jet into international markets.
As the IAF continues its investigative efforts, the force has honored Wing Commander Syal, recognizing him as a dedicated and proficient pilot who served with “unwavering commitment.” Further updates will be provided once the investigation team reveals its findings.
