Hong Kong authorities raised the highest-level black rain warning on June 18 as intense rainfall swept across the city. The observatory warned residents to remain indoors and stay alert as heavy downpours continued throughout the day.
Schools and Businesses Suspend Activities
The severe weather alert led to the closure of schools and disruptions to normal business operations in several parts of the city. Officials advised employers and residents to follow emergency weather guidelines until conditions improve.
Heavy Rainfall Raises Flood Concerns
Weather experts reported that rainfall exceeding 70 millimetres per hour was likely to continue. The observatory warned that low-lying areas could experience flash flooding as drainage systems come under pressure from persistent rain.
Strong Winds Add To Weather Risks
Apart from heavy rain, strong wind gusts were recorded in parts of Hong Kong. The southwestern district of Tai O experienced winds reaching around 80 kilometres per hour, increasing the risk of falling objects and travel disruptions.
Southern China Also Faces Severe Conditions
The weather system affecting Hong Kong has also impacted large areas of southern China. Authorities in nearby Shenzhen issued a red rain warning and urged residents to avoid waterlogged zones and other potentially dangerous locations.
Travel Plans May Be Affected
The adverse weather comes just ahead of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday period, when many residents are expected to travel. Officials cautioned that transport services could face delays and disruptions if conditions worsen.
Authorities Urge Public To Stay Alert
Emergency agencies continue to monitor the situation closely as concerns grow over possible landslides, mountain flooding and infrastructure damage. Residents have been advised to avoid risky areas and follow official updates until the weather stabilises.
