Homicide investigators in Surrey, British Columbia, have identified the young man who was tragically shot dead as Gaurav Deol, 18. Police shared his name in an attempt to gather more details from the community and propel the investigation forward.
The shooting occurred early Sunday morning at the intersection of 138 Street and 62 Avenue. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and found a vehicle that had collided with a power pole. Inside, they discovered Deol with severe gunshot injuries. Despite immediate medical attention, he was declared dead on site.
In a related incident shortly after, police were alerted to a vehicle fire in another location in Surrey. A burned white Toyota SUV, believed to be linked to the shooting, has been retrieved for forensic analysis, aiding the ongoing inquiry. Authorities are working to piece together the timeline leading to this tragic event.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is spearheading the case in collaboration with the Surrey Police Service and forensic experts. Initial assessments indicate this was likely a targeted shooting, not a random attack. However, no suspects or arrests have been reported at this time.
By releasing Deol’s name, investigators hope to glean insights into his recent activities, connections, and whereabouts leading up to the incident. Detectives are actively engaging with his family, friends, and potential witnesses while also analyzing footage from surveillance systems and other evidence collected at several sites. The investigation is ongoing, and police encourage anyone with information to step forward.
Authorities especially want to hear from individuals who might have been near the shooting location or the vehicle fire from late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Dashcam recordings, security videos, and personal accounts could provide crucial evidence to identify the perpetrator(s).
The untimely death of Deol has left the local community in shock and has intensified concerns over rising violent crime in the Metro Vancouver area. Investigators assure the public that significant efforts are being made to locate those responsible for this crime. Anyone with relevant information is urged to reach out to IHIT or Crime Stoppers.
