Illinois Father Charged After Accidentally Shooting Daughter While Aiming at Bird

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Prairie Du Rocher, Illinois: In a heartbreaking accident, a father has been charged after a bullet intended to shoot a bird tragically killed his daughter. Six days before her 15th birthday, Emma Schultheis lost her life in what authorities describe as a preventable tragedy.

The incident occurred on July 21, when David Schultheis fired a gun to shoot a buzzard that had flown into a brick building near their home. Unfortunately, the bullet passed through the bird, went through a window, and struck his daughter, Emma Schultheis.

Emergency responders were called immediately. They administered CPR and other life-saving treatments on the scene before rushing Emma to a hospital in the St. Louis area. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the hospital, leaving her family and community in deep shock and grief.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department handed the investigation to the State’s Attorney’s Office and filed formal charges last month. “There are no words that can adequately express the heartbreak and gravity of this tragic event,” the sheriff’s department said. “The death of a child under any circumstances is profoundly devastating.”

The authorities added, “While this incident may have been preventable, our obligation is not to dwell in speculation but to uncover and present the facts with integrity.”

Charges Filed

On September 2, Monroe County State’s Attorney Ryan Webb charged David Schultheis with reckless discharge of a firearm. In addition, a woman named Karen Schwarze was charged with concealment of a homicidal death and obstruction of justice. Authorities have not publicly specified Schwarze’s connection to the victim.

Investigators said Schwarze hid the .40-calibre pistol used in the shooting and attempted to prevent others from speaking to law enforcement officers during the early stages of the investigation. “The investigation revealed that following the execution of search warrants, Ms. Schwarze attempted to influence others not to speak with law enforcement officers,” deputies said.

David Schultheis voluntarily surrendered at the Monroe County Jail and was released pending court proceedings. Meanwhile, Karen Schwarze is still making arrangements to turn herself in.

Community in Shock

The incident has left the small community of Prairie Du Rocher in grief and disbelief. Residents have expressed sorrow for the family, emphasizing how tragic and rare such accidents are. Local authorities have reminded the public about firearm safety and the dangers of mishandling guns, especially around children.

Emma’s death highlights the serious consequences that can arise from careless firearm use, even when there is no intent to harm. Authorities continue to investigate and gather facts to ensure justice is served while supporting the family during this unimaginable loss.
