Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated BSNL’s indigenous ‘Swadeshi’ 4G stack, marking India’s official entry into the elite group of nations like China, Denmark, Sweden, and South Korea that manufacture homegrown telecom equipment.
The launch coincided with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s silver jubilee celebrations, where the Prime Minister commissioned over 97,500 mobile 4G towers, including 92,600 advanced 4G technology sites. Built at a cost of ₹37,000 crore, these towers use indigenous technology and form the backbone of India’s digital expansion.
Officials confirmed that the new cloud-based 4G network is future-ready, with the ability to seamlessly upgrade to 5G. This rollout supports the vision of Digital India, helping bridge the digital divide and extend connectivity to rural and remote regions.

More than 26,700 previously unconnected villages, including 2,472 villages in Odisha, will now gain access to telecom services. This will serve over 20 lakh new subscribers, empowering communities in border areas and regions affected by left-wing extremism.
A key highlight is that the new towers are solar-powered, making this India’s largest cluster of green telecom sites and a significant step toward sustainable digital infrastructure.
Alongside the 4G rollout, the Prime Minister also launched the 100% 4G saturation project under Digital Bharat Nidhi, connecting nearly 30,000 villages in mission mode.
This major development is expected to strengthen BSNL’s telecom services, accelerate the transition towards 5G, and position India as a leader in self-reliant, eco-friendly digital infrastructure.
