India strengthened their grip on the second ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow as captain Shubman Gill produced another classy half-century while Rohit Sharma achieved a major batting milestone. The hosts continued their impressive form after winning the opening match of the series.
Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping to make early inroads. India made several changes to the playing XI, including handing a debut to fast bowler Prince Yadav. Yashasvi Jaiswal was also brought into the side to strengthen the batting order.
The visitors struck early when Jaiswal departed after a brief stay at the crease. However, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill quickly settled in and rebuilt the innings with a fluent partnership. Both batters found boundaries regularly and kept the scoreboard moving.
Rohit reached a major career milestone during his innings by completing 14,000 runs in List A cricket. The Indian opener looked comfortable throughout his knock and appeared set for a half-century before being dismissed for 48 by a brilliant delivery from Rashid Khan.
Gill once again displayed his consistency in the ODI format. The Indian captain mixed caution with aggression and reached another well-deserved fifty. His elegant strokeplay ensured that Afghanistan struggled to regain control of the contest.
Following Rohit's dismissal, Ishan Kishan joined Gill and continued the momentum. The pair attacked loose deliveries and prevented Afghanistan's bowlers from building pressure. India crossed the 100-run mark comfortably and remained firmly in control of the chase.
With Gill anchoring the innings and support coming from the middle order, India looked set to move closer to another victory. The performance highlighted the depth and confidence within the Indian batting unit as they aimed to secure the ODI series.
