In a heart-wrenching development, the lifeless form of a 22-year-old Indian student from Alwar, Rajasthan, who had been untraceable for nearly three weeks in Russia, has been located. The individual has been identified as Ajit Singh Chaudhary, a student pursuing an MBBS degree at Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa.
Reports indicate that Ajit disappeared on October 19 after he left his hostel, casually mentioning to friends that he was going out to purchase milk. Upon failing to return, his friends and the Indian student community in Ufa organized a search and promptly informed local authorities.
After an exhaustive search spanning 19 days, his remains were found in a dam by the White River this past Thursday. This discovery has sent shockwaves through his family and raised urgent calls for a comprehensive investigation into the events leading to his untimely death.
Officials revealed that Ajit’s belongings, including clothes, shoes, and his phone, were located near the riverbank shortly after his disappearance. This information has fueled speculation regarding possible foul play, although the official cause of death remains undetermined.
Former Union Minister Jitendra Singh Alwar expressed his sorrow over the incident, labeling it "deeply tragic and suspicious." He has urged External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to ensure a prompt investigation and assist in bringing Ajit’s body back to India as soon as possible.
“Ajit was a diligent and talented student, sent abroad by his family with immense hopes. The news of his death is devastating for the entire community,” Singh shared on X (formerly Twitter).
The All India Medical Students’ Association (Foreign Wing) is now involved, confirming that Ajit’s peers at the university identified his body, although no official statement has been released by the university administration as of yet.
Ajit’s family in Rajasthan is overwhelmed with grief, anxiously awaiting news regarding the repatriation of his remains. The Indian Embassy in Moscow has been notified and is likely to facilitate the repatriation process.
This tragic incident underscores ongoing safety concerns among Indian students studying abroad, especially in less populated areas.
