As worries about digital addiction rise, key figures in social media are taking a closer look at screen time. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri recently shared insights on how he regulates screen usage for his children, emphasizing a responsible approach that prioritizes earned access over strict limitations.
In a recent podcast with It’s Called Soccer, Mosseri revealed that his children do not have unfettered access to screens. They love gaming, yet they start the week without any screen time, instead needing to earn it through structured effort and routines. He believes this approach fosters a sense of discipline while minimizing stress in the home environment.
His children complete three half-hour homework sessions throughout the week, leading to a reward of 90 minutes of screen time during the weekend once they fulfill this requirement. Mosseri argues that this system supports consistency and teaches kids the value of hard work.
An important shift in Mosseri's parenting was moving away from using screen time as a form of punishment. He recognized that withdrawing screens often exacerbated tensions and didn't effectively improve behavior. This realization prompted him to adopt a new perspective.
Now, he starts with zero screen time, allowing his children to earn access instead. This strategy feels more balanced and produces less emotional turmoil while maintaining necessary boundaries.
Nonetheless, he acknowledged that flexibility is sometimes essential—especially when traveling. He quipped that during long flights, the usual limits can be relaxed, as screens then serve a practical purpose for family harmony.
Mosseri's parenting philosophy resonates with a growing trend where families guide children towards healthy digital habits instead of imposing strict bans. Emphasizing structure, balance, and emotional intelligence is gaining traction over rigid rules.
What is particularly notable is how Mosseri, as the head of a major social media platform, grasps the importance of setting boundaries in the digital era. His approach communicates a vital message: screens aren't inherently harmful; it's the manner in which they are utilized that counts.
In a world increasingly influenced by technology, Mosseri’s methods promote the idea of teaching balance, recognizing effort, and prioritizing emotional health rather than fear or punishment.
