FIFA President Gianni Infantino has publicly defended the pricing structure for tickets to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The remarks come after fan groups voiced strong criticism regarding the steep ticket prices, which many describe as significantly higher than those at the previous World Cup held in 2022.
The 2026 tournament, marking the first time the World Cup will be hosted by three countries simultaneously, has generated unprecedented excitement worldwide. However, this enthusiasm has been tempered by concerns over affordability, with some fans highlighting that ticket costs for the upcoming event are several times greater than similar matches during the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
In response to these concerns, Infantino stressed that the ticket prices are set in accordance with the overwhelming global demand for seats and the substantial revenue generated, which is crucial for supporting the sport’s continued growth across the globe. He explained that ticket pricing is carefully balanced to reflect the value of the event and to ensure funding for football development initiatives worldwide.
To address affordability issues, FIFA recently introduced a new ticket pricing tier priced at $60, specifically designed to offer more budget-friendly options for fans of teams that qualify for the tournament. This move aims to broaden access and allow more supporters to experience the excitement of the World Cup in person.
Infantino emphasized that while ticket prices are higher, the 2026 World Cup promises to be a unique and unforgettable experience, with matches held in iconic venues across three nations. The expanded tournament format, which will feature 48 teams instead of the usual 32, will also provide more opportunities for fans to see their favorite teams compete on the biggest stage.
FIFA’s strategy highlights the challenge of balancing financial sustainability with fan accessibility, especially as the organization seeks to continue investing in football infrastructure, youth development, and global outreach programs.
Despite the criticism, FIFA remains confident that the new pricing tiers and the scale of the event will satisfy a wide spectrum of fans, ensuring that the 2026 World Cup becomes a landmark occasion in football history.
