In a major political development ahead of Nepal’s parliamentary elections slated for March, two prominent leaders have formed a powerful alliance that could significantly disrupt the dominance of traditional political parties that have controlled Nepal’s political landscape for over three decades.
Balendra Shah, widely known as Balen, is the current mayor of Kathmandu and a popular rapper-turned-politician. On Sunday, Shah officially joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), marking a strategic partnership aimed at consolidating their voter base and presenting a united front against the older, established political parties in Nepal. This move is seen by many political experts as a bold attempt to capitalize on the growing public demand for fresh leadership and political reform.
The Rastriya Swatantra Party is led by Rabi Lamichhane, a former television host who successfully transitioned into politics and quickly emerged as a significant figure in Nepal’s political arena. Lamichhane’s party has gained considerable traction, especially among young voters and urban populations who are increasingly dissatisfied with the traditional parties known for corruption and inefficiency.
Party officials from the RSP confirmed Shah’s induction and expressed high hopes that this alliance will boost their electoral prospects. “Bringing together two popular and charismatic leaders like Balendra Shah and Rabi Lamichhane strengthens our campaign and offers Nepalese voters a real alternative,” an RSP spokesperson said.
Political analysts note that this new coalition symbolizes a broader desire for change and a rejection of long-standing political norms. With the March elections just around the corner, all eyes are on this alliance to see if it can successfully challenge the entrenched political powers and reshape Nepal’s political future.
As the election campaign heats up, other political parties are expected to respond to this growing momentum with renewed strategies and alliances, making the upcoming polls one of the most competitive and unpredictable in recent Nepalese history.
